Returning to our own district we find Palmerston races set down for January 1 and 2, and Lake Wakatip for the 11th and 12th. The weights for the principal events at the Hokitika meeting are
Thus only ten are left in for each race out of twenty-hve entries. Mr Redwood has accepted with neither Guy Fawkes, Songster, nor Maroro ; so apparently the old horse is thought out of them with 9st lOlbs and lOst to carry. Maroro has probably not got right since Christchurch, and Songster’s , doubtful understandings are giving trouble. Mr Delamain has not sent Templeton or Follefarine, and he will have to rely on Flfin King alone ; while Dan O’Brien intends remaining in Otago till after our March meeting. The remainder of the non-acceptors are local horses, with the exception of Tadmor, Nero, Fallacy, and Wrangler. It is difficult to speculate as to the probable winners, for the Ray stable has Danebury and Middleton in each race, and it is impossible to tell how they will be sent. I expect to see this pair win both events between them, after a hard struggle with Izaak Walton and Ariel. Pegasus.
