THIRD DAY. The principal match of the meeting was fired to-day, viz., the competition for the Ladies’ Challenge Shield. The weather was fine in the early part of the morning, the sun, if anything, being rather tropical, but towards the close of the last range a gusty wind sprung up, and the competitors had to mm about eighteen inches from the targets. The ranges were 205, 400, and 500 yards, seven shots at each, new Wimbledon targets. The City Guards secured the coveted trophy, beating the Bruce Rifles by one point. Bad not one of the latter company’s representatives been so unfortunate as to place a centre on the wrong target the Miltonites would have won the Shield. The No. 1 Clutha were looked upon as the certain winners of it, and indeed their chance up to commencing the last range was a very “rosy” one. The scores made at each range were: —At 200 yds, 5.D.8., 88; E.T., 101; Waikara, 108 ; No. 1 Company City Guards, 111 ; Waikouaiti, 81; W.T., 117 ; No. 2 Clutha, 83 ; D.N.8., 92; Artillery, 92 ; Bruce, 112; No. 1 Clutha, 119; Portobello, 118. At 400 yds, S.D.R, 156; E.T., 143; Wakari, 132; No. 1 Company, 148; Waikouaiti, 139 ; W.T., 142 ; ao, 2 Clutha, 144; D.N.8., 101 ; N.D,, 129; Artillery, 113; Bruce, 133; Clutha, No. 1,141; Portobello, 12t At 500 yds, S.D.R., 98 ; E.T., 113 ; Wakari, 88; No. 1 Company, 112; Waikouaiti, 87; W.T., 107 ; No. 2 Clutha, 47 ; D.N.8., 95 ; North Dunedin, 92; Artillery, 91; Bruce, 125 ; Clutha No. 1, 91 ; Portobello, 109. The Artillery and D.N.B. fired with carbines, the others with the long rifle. Subjoined arc the scores :

Standing at 200 yards ; a imposition at, the other ranges. The new (1874) Wimbledon targets to he used, scoring to count thus:—Bull's-eyes, s marks; centre. -4; inner, 3; outer, 2. City Guards.
A meeting of the Council of the Association was held this morning to consider a disputed shot in Yol. Willocks’s score in the fourth match and the shot allowed. It was also resolved that as the Cup presented by Mr Mason had not been allotted as a prize in any match it should be shot for at the next annual meeting. It may be mentioned that one Volunteer who fired throughout the meeting was a veteran of over sixty-five years, and is one ot the oldest members of the Association.
The Carbine Match was proceeding when our reporter left the ground this afternoon.
It has been arranged to take the Consolation Match at five o’clock on Monday morning, and the Small-bore Match afterwards. The Cadets’ Match has been fixed for noon on Tuesday, in order to give the youths’ parents an opportunity of witnessing the firing. There will be a battalion-parade on Tuesday evening, and the prizes will be presented afterwards.
