REEFS AT LONGWOOD.
"Excitement," says the 'Western Star ' of December 2, " ran high in Riverton on Saturday morning last, on its being rumored that a rich gold bearing reef had been struck at the Invercargill Company's claim, in the vicinity of Bald Hill, Longwood, and speculations were rife as to the number of ounces to the ton the stone was calculated to yield. On inquiry we ascertained that Douglas, who has been prospecting the Longwood Ranges for the last ten months for the Invercargill Company, Btruck a reef on the face of Bald Hill, near George- Creek, some weeks ago, and after following it up for a distance of forty feet observed indications in the casing of the long sought for precious metal. On breaking off the stone, the reef was found to be about ten feet thick, with two veinp, one running south-east, the other southwest. One of the shareholders visited the ground and brought away several specimens of the stone which he has forwarded to Dunedin for the purpose of being tested.
