WRECK OF THE S.S. OTAGO.
TotheEditor. ffc« l £r l n? esire ft 6x3kW the attentions i the traveling public to the injustice done . them by the owners of steamers who do not sufficiently officer their vessels. I ask yon, . (a ! ° ne of sound judgment), how can yon expect that two mates conld be able to do the duty -of a ship like the Otago, when they had to be afoot all day and take their watch - and watch during the night ? I consider that this mean attempt at economy, by evidently avaricious owners, desiresaswelltheattention of Mr Plimsoll as the load line did; and" that it is a pity that they cannot be made responsible for the loss we have sustained, by what I consider their criminal nogfect! Ihe idea of sending a ship to sea with numerous passengers, whose lives are dew < to themselves and their immediate circle; - under the charge of officers who ean hardly keep their eyes open from excessive fatigue is quite in keeping with the habits of those who stand to win, no matter what happens. p In these few words I express tho indignant opinion of the sensible and the sufferers.—l am, &c, Dunedin, December 7. *
