Provincial Council Library. Christchdech, December 7.—The 'Press' this morning replies in warm terms to the article in the 'New Zealand Times,' respecting the transfer of the Provincial Council library to the Canterbury College, and points out that the article in questioa displays unwarrantable ignorance, which becomes highly offensive when based upon such absurd premises. An attempt is made to act the mentor. If the writer of the article had possessed the knowledge he ought to possess, or had not written in such indecent haste, but had made inquiries, he would have known that the (Canterbury College is not a private institution, but essentially one of a public character, open to every class, and that the Board of Governors are, among other things, the guardians of the Museum, the Public Library, and School of Agriculture. Sir George Grey. Grahamstown, December 7.—lt is rumored hero that Sir George Grey has been offered the Governorship of Cape Colony, and declined it. [From our own Correspondents.] Clerical Scandal. Wellington, December 6.—There has been a clerical scandal at Eangitikei. A person named Cawood, residing at Marton, circulated slanderous rumors affecting the moral character of Rev. Mr Keeve (Wesleyau), who had removed from Marton to kelson. Mr Reeves returned to Marton to face Ins accuser, but Carwood declined to come to the scratch, notwithstanding which, a two dnys' inquiry has been held by the Wesleyan ministers who came from Wanganui and iaranaki for the purpose. The result of the inquiry was the.passmg of the following resolution:—" That this meeting having carefully considered the evidence brought m support of an accusation made by I*. IS. Carwood against the Eev. Mr Eeeve, records its unanimous opinion that the evidence wholly failed to substantiate the charge. Disobedient Seamen. Auckland, December 6.—James Belcher died in the Lunatic Asylum. A verdict of died from natural causes was returned. The body of Don, drowned in the Wangarei river, has been found.
