UNDER THE VERANDAH.
Some curious facts were brought to light by a recent Sunday’s service in Wilson’s Circus in aid of the charities not included in the Hospital Sunday fund in Melbourne. One morning paper calculated the number present at from 8,000 to 10,000, another at from 12,000 to 15,000, and a third puts them down at 17,000. Those best-qualified to give a good estimate say that there were considerably over 15,000 present ; but the amount collected from this host—more than half the number of the population of the largest Australian colony—was the sum of LB3 8s 2|d, or an average of about five farthings ahead. But there were some who gave with comparative liberality one a half-sovereign, eight 2s 6d each, fifty 2s each, 100 Is each, and 800 6d each, or, altogether, 859 who made up L3l 10s of the collection, leaving over 14,000 people who didn’t average a penny a headin this loan to the Lord.—Melbourne ‘Leader.’
