A NUISANCE.
. To the Editor. Sir,— Two letters appeared in your columns lately, complaining of the state of the gutters on the eastern side of George street; and if they were bad then, they certainly are worse now, especially from Albany street to near St. David s:reet. I see a case of scarlet fever has been reported in this street. The wonder is that there have not been a hundred cases reported about the locality in question, for the abominable stuff allowed to lie and accumulate is more like rotten turtle soup, with a horrid green scum on it, than dirty water merely, and during such weather too. What in the name of wonder are the surface men doing that they cannot clean away this mess at least once in two or three days ? Of all the streets in Dunedin this one seems to me to be the most neglected. I wonder when there will be proper kerbing and channeling done, or what our worthy Councillors for the ward think about it? I would like to know. —I am, &c., One Who Pays Heavy Rates. Dunedin, December 2.
