Twice demands were made for encores, but the amount of work thrown upon Mr Emmet’s shoulders prevented his complying. By the death of Mr G, A. E. There was a good attend ance, and Mr J. B. Park read a paper on “ The Claims and Responsibilities of the Schoolmaster.” At the conclusion an interesting discussion took place, and the proceedings closed with a vote of thanks to Mr Park. Yesterday afternoon, while two gentlemen were passing Chinamen’s Gully, on the Port Chalmers and Deborah Bay road, a large stone came down the face of the railway embankment just in front of them, and rolled across the road, finding its way into the sea. As the road is very much frequented by pedestrians, a little more caution ought to be displayed on the part of the contractors. The Zealandia, with the Californian mail, is due at Auckland to-morrow. Among her passengers are the Hon. Mr Fox and the Georgia Minstrels. The latter is a very clever troupe, which comes to the colonies under the care of our old friend Mr Phil. Kiri y. The friends of Mr and Mrs G. B. Allen (Alice May) may be interested in knowing that they returned to Melbourne on the 17th ult. The burlesque of “ Chilperic” was repeated at the Queen’s Theatre last night to a large and enthusiastic audience. The numerous jokes scattered through the piece seemed to be greatly relished, and the songs and incidental music were duly appreciated. A little more dancing might perhaps be introduced with advantage, especially as some of the performers are evidently clever in that line. “The Waterman” will precede the extravaganza this evening. We take the following items from yesterday’s *N. 0. Times’:—A party of gentlemen, among whom were Messrs John Davie, Stout, Mackerras, and Blair, C.E., visited the Otepopo slate quarries on Wednesday, it is understood in connection with the proposed company. They toek away with them [ to Dunedin a fine sample of the slate, which *1 is pronounced fully equal to the best Welsh, while it is represented as existing in unlimited quantity.—The Waiareka branch railway has been opened for goods traffic as far as Teaneraki. Last evening Mr John Barr, of Cratgilea, presented the Caledonian Society with two handsome silver-mounted hammers, to be used by the president and vice-president in presiding over the society’s meetings. That presented te the president bore the following inscription “ President’s hammer, for the time being, of the Caledonian Society of 1 ;tago, made from the wood of the Craigilea, cotland. Presented by John Barr (Craigilea), bard of the society. Dunedin, December, 1876.” The inscription on the vicepresident’s hammer was to the same effect. The other article presented was a bicker, made from a tree which grew by the gable of Alloway’s Auld Haunted Kirk on the banks of the Doon, and containing a representation of the interior of Burns’s cottage. The gifts were suitably acknowledged by the president of the society (Mr R. Wilson). It is correct, as stated by the ‘Clutha Leader ’ yesterday, that Mr Macandrew has written to the Governor complaining that letters addressed to the Superintendent of Otago were detained at the Post Office and forwarded to the Hon. George M'Lean at the latter’s request. Mr Macandrew urges that there are many people in Otago who doubt the legality of the abolition of the office he held, and that their communications, though addressed to him officially, are still his private property. It is not the fact, as stated in our Napier telegram, that the course pursued by Mr Macandrew, of sending ou to Wellington such letters addressed to the Superintendent as reached him, delayed the preparation of, or caused any bitch in the arrangements connected with the approaching ' uacil elections; but when it was found li.at the public service was being injuriously ■.ffi-eCed. 'r M‘Lean took the action of icli Mr Macandrew cwmplaius. We 1 o ve th <.t very few letters were so forarded to and opened by Mr M‘Leau ; and that fop many days no letters addressed to the Superintendent of Otago have passed through the Post-office here.
