THE INVERCARGILL COUNCIL AND THE EX-SUPERINTEN-DENT.
Some discussion took place in the Town Council on Thursday night regarding unfair insuniations made by the ex-Superintendent of Otago, as to the motives which had actuated the Council in applying to have a man placed in charge of a railway crossing. Correspondence bad taken place in regard to the matter, and in dealing with Mr Macandrew's last reply, Councillor Hall moved, and Councillor Reche seconded—"That the Mayor be asked to reply to the letter from the late Superintendent, pointing out that the letter which the Mayor forwarded under date 26th October has not been replied to by the letter dated Bth November, and that the Council desires a reply, and also to express the hope that the promise to place a man at the railway crossing will be given effect to." To this Councillor Wade moved, Councillor Hatch seconding, as an amendment, which was carried by the casting vote of the Mayor—" That His Worship the Mayor be requested to call the attention of his late Honor the Superintendent to the fact that the letter of the Under-Secretary of date November Bth, having contained an insinuation that the members of this Council were actuated by improper motives in applying to have a man placed in charge of the Clyde street railway crossing, and an explanation having been asked his Honor, he has neither given such explanation nor withdrawn the insinuation, but contented himself with acknowledging the receipt of the letter requesting such explanation."—'Southland Times.'
