THE LATE FIRE AT BLENHEIM.

The 'Express' of Wednesday gives the following among some further particulars of the late serious fire in Blenheim :—" The loss of public records and documents of every description has been most serious. Not even a Provincial Gazette remains, the working plans of the Purvey Office are all gone, and an experienced person informs us that it will take twenty years to replace them. The law library, which was the painstaking accumulation of Mr Barleyman, and one of his hobbies, has shared the eommen fate with the Provincial Council library, the registers of bills of sale and other securities, the current Provincial vouchers, correspondence, contracts, and accounts; and those belond n g to the Customs, Supreme Court, Resident Magistrate's Court, Registration Department, Posi Office, and the Borough Council. The perplexity arising out of the loss of so many things may be best imagined by outsiders from the circumstance that no Court could be held on Monday, as all the summonses were burnt. For years to come papers and records will be wanted, and it will be remembered that they were burnt in the grea< fire of 1876. There is one element of satisfaction in the large brick safes not long since erected. To these we are largely indebted now for the safety of all the original maps and plans of the Land Office, the registers of land, deeds, &c. It will be satisfactory to some to learn that the seals of the Province, Sheriff, &c, have been found; and to oar Masonic readers that nearly the whole of the valuable lodge furniture, jewels, organ, &c, were saved by a few zealous friends who incurred considerable risk in their efforts. Yesterday Mr Clayton, the Colonial Architect, with Messrs Douslin, Clark, and assistants took measurements on the site of the late public buildings. We understand Mr Clayton proposes to erect a two-storey building in concrete."
