Cowan, assistance to start in nßiness, also denying that he ever received one shilling from me. I now beg thus publicly to reiterate the statement that I then made, and as proof thereof can produce the butt of cheque book signed by Cowan, in act the cheque and also butt being, wi-h. the exception of my signature, in Cowan's Handwriting, in acknowledgment of last amount that I lent him, viz., L 55 10*, date May 14th, 1876, besides numerous amounts, large and small, prior to above date, May 14th, vouchers for which can be seen.
