THE VOLUNTEERS.
Hokitika has been selected as the locate of the next Colonial prize-firing competition. The competition in dismounting and. mounting drill, between detachments of the Christchurohand Dunedin Artillery, comes off to-morrow evening. It is proposed to hojd a Volunteer review at Queenstown during Christmas week, and to invite the Kiverton, Cromwell, and Invercargill companies to take part in it. Owing to the absence of Major Jones on sick leave, the following temporary appointments are made in the Second Battalion, Otago VoJnnteeis, for the 9th of November, viz.:—Captain Andrews, East Taieri Rifles, to command; Captain Pettit, Brace Bines, Senior Major; Captain M'Neil, No. 2 Clutha Bifles, Junior Major. The City Guards held their third competition at the Wakari range this morniug for places in the firing for the Ladies' Challenge Shield. The weather was magnificent, aad the scoring above the average. Corp. Smith has fired very evenly throughout, and, as he is credited with third place in each competition, he is certain to be one of t> 6 representative team of five men. The fourth and final competition takes place at "Wakari on Friday morning at 5 o'clock. Subjoined are to-day's scores :
