Cab-racing.—William Carey pleaded not guilty to. a charge of recklessly conducting a cab and using provoking language in King street on the 23rd inst. Defendant asserted that another cabman, named Stafford, was racing him for the Albany street stand. As the evidence was somewhat conflicting, their Worships adjourned the case until tomorrow, in order to procure the attendance of Stafford.. Abusive Language.—Frederick Crabbe, charged with abusing a guard at the railway station, pleaded guilty* and was fined 10s and costs.
Insulting Ellen Hensen pleaded not guilty to this offence at Mosgiel on the 24th inat. The plaintiff and another woman proved the offence, and defendant was fined 10s, or three days' imprisonment. Vagrancy. George Madison, charged with being a vagrant, pleaded not guilty; but Sergeant-Major Bevan and Detective [ Bain gave conclusive evidence as to ; his i guilt, and he was sent to gaol for one month. 111-using a Horse.—Charles Everett, an omnibus driver, pleaded guilty to this offence. According to • the constable's evidence, prisoner had been guilty of great cruelty, and he was fined 10s and costs.
