Disorderly Characters.— Jane Crawford, an old offender, for; being drunk in' Machin’s right-of-way, was fihedLd, or fourteen days’ imprisonment, and' for using obscene language, L 5, or_ one month. Ellen Guthrie, tor using, obscene language, was fined L 5, or one month’s.imprisonment. Vagrancy. —Charles a young man, was l charged with having no lawful or. visible means of support.—Detective Henderson stated that for the last six or seven weeks the accused had been in the habit of living in different brothels, superihtendißg disturbances*, a&d acting.’as, bully,—The prisoner pleaded that he Had been unable to find employment at his trade, but the police stated that he was a worthless fellow, and supposed to have been implicated in certain robberies.—He was sent to gaol for three months.

Another Worthless Fellow.— Charles Connellan was charged with having no lawful means of support. Mr E. Cook defended, and submitted that accused was improperly arrested, but his contention was overruled. —Detective Henderson stated that he apprehended accused yesterday afternoon in a brothel kept by one Mary Connellan in Lees street. He had done little or no work since his arrival in the Colony, and was continually hanging , about brothels. He was a suspected thief, and a dangerous one.—Mr Cook; Are you aware that accused is a brother to this woman Connellan ?—Witness: I have no doubt that some of the prostitutes have been. supporting him for some time.—Corroborative-evidence, was given by Detective Neil, Sergeant Anderson, and Constable Conn. Mahony,: laborer, who was called for the defence, said that accused had lived in his house for the last few Weeks. He had conducted himself respectably, 4 and had worked for yrithess at St. Kilda. Before that be 'had'worked at the Clntha.—By Inspector Mallard. : I came out in the Caroline, the accused in the Asia. Accused’s sister has been paying,.Jap his board. He is determined not to remainidle, and is willing to work.—The Bench considered the charge proved.—Sergeant Anderson produced a former conviction . for vagrtgicy against the accused, whgLwas sent to goal for three months.—Mr Cook said he would probably move to quash the conviction.—Anna M‘Pherson was sent to gaol for two months.
