The Southland Society's Curator (Mr Howard) has successfully removed between 2,000 and 3,000 young salmon from the hatching boxes to the Aparima. At the Institute’s meeting last night Hr. Murphy and Mr A. Hyslop were elected membeis ; Mr J. T. I homson was nominated governor for the N .Z. Institute ; and Dr. Berrgren, the Swedish botanist, nominated an honorary member of the latter. Papers were read on “ The Entomology of New Zealand ” by Captain Hutton; on “■' tago Plants ’ by Mr G M. Thomson; on “Moa Bones” by Mr v.’ooth of Hamiltous ; and “ Notes on the Maori Rat” by Capt. Hutton. At the meeting on « uesday next Mr Blair will read a paper on “ Otago r i imber ” The secretaries of the town Cricket l lubs last night arranged a series of matches for the season, which will be published in due course. The first eleven of the D.C.C. meets a combined team from the other clubs on December Id. Apropos of cricket, the ‘ South’and Times ’ makes the assertion that whilst at Dunedin Mr Bennett was informed that it was useless to take the All England Eleven to Invercargill, as it was “only a village, with no ground, and no cricketers except such as a Dunedin third eleven could easi y beat,”
