CITY COUNCIL.
The following business was transacted after we went to press yesterday : - Mr Goldie wrote that the residents of Mansford "township were very desirous of having a road from their residences to the beach, which would nave" to be taken through section 2, block 1, Lower Harbor West, at present leased by him from the Corporation of Dunedin. Permission was granted some time since for foot traffic. What the residents now want is that the said track be widened into a dray road, which, if the Corporation had no objection, he, as lessee, would be quite willing to grant.—'Referred to the Works Committee. Messrs Royse, Stead, and Co., wrote that they had been requested by some of the principal riparian proprietors on the Leith to ask if the Corporation would be disposed to sell the Bill which it possesses, empowering it to take the Water of Leith, and if so, what sum it was willing to accept for it. Tbe proprietors would form a company, and bind themselves not to interfere with the Corporation'? present water supply. If the CorE oration would sell its Bill, this would reeve it of any further trouble in regard to an extended water supply, and at the same time would assure to the City and suburbs an ample supply of water. —lt was decided to thank Messrs Royse, Stead for their liberal offer, and to decline it; Or. The Legislative Committee recommended that a bye-law should be passed enacting that in all cases smoking in cabs, &c, must be discontinued upon the request of any passenger, and that in no case it be permitted when any female is in tbe vehicle ; and no driver mußt smoke at all whilst driving his vehicle. Tbat the Inspector have power to order any vehicle or driver to discontinue plying forbore at any time, provided the vehicle or driver be dirty or out of order.
