COW-KEEPING IN THE CITY.
To the Editor.
Sir, —I should feel obliged by your granting me space in your columns for a few remarks on the above subject. . 'i?o the keeping within the City boundary of cows, or. even pigs or other animals, I have no objection, so long as their houses are properly constructed, drained and kept clean. Under such circumstances there can be no more objection to cows than to horses ; but when it is permitted for cows to be kept'tied up day and night in ill-built sheds without drainage, their droppings allowed to simply soak into the earth about the shi-d, the ground soon gets completely saturated.; and in ,hot weather all kinds of bad miasmatic gases arise. It is not, therePore, to be wondered at that the town is full of fever; and,? being so now, what may we expect during the summer months, with our bad drainage and insufficient supply of water ? If there is no bye-law prohibiting the keeping of cows under the circumstances above described, it is high time that.our Oifcy Council parsed one to provide, namely, that cowsheds should be properly paved with aa open cement drain, running from end to end*, connected with a cemented tank at one end, into which the droppings could run, and which could be emptied when full; and to make the shed be thoroughly washed out at least once a day. The member of the City Council who first moves in the above matter will be deserving of the thanks of every citizen ; and I hope that you, Mr Editor, will' lend your assistancewith your able pen to .bring about this moat desirable change in the present system of cow-keeping in the City.—l am, &c, ." ■ • /Citizen..
