DUNEDIN SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
This Committee held its ordinary monthly meet%P a * M £. Jatneß B (the secretary) offlce last evening. Mrs Walker was appointed by ballot to clean the N«thD«nedin School. The number of applications was thirteen.—ln reply to a. request of the School committee that Inspectors of Schools Bhould give certificates entitling pupils in the Dunedin Schools to prizes, the Education Board pointed out th tthe Inspectors* examinations were not of a character «> determine the actual merits of each- soholar, and that country schools would be equally entitled to similar assistance in awarding prises as those of imnedin. To lay such a burden upon the already onerous duties of the Inspectors would be more than they could accomplish. Mr Pish did not agree with the opinion of the Education Board, but the oommtttee thought, as the decision had been arrived at, little advantage would be realised from discussing iwu Friday, December the 15th, the schools should close, and on Saturday the children should have a picnic if the weather proveu favorable; if not, that it should be given on the Monday. The School Committee had invited tne co-pperation of the Normal School, which was cordially agreed*o, and Messrs Strode, Pish, Street, Bell, Sherwin, and Bobin were appointed a cornmitt* e to make the necessary arrangements. The attendance at the four schools during the past quarter was-Middle District, 199; North Donedin, ml Sollttl > 410 '• Albany street, 311; toial, 1,438 The committee voted a sum of money for prizes, to be divided among the sobools in proportion to the attendance, and resolved thit two prizes for girls and two for boys in each class shall be awarded on the certificate of the master. A special prize is to be given to the best schol*-- in mental arithmetic m each school. Beyond the prizes mentioned, class singing, and the exhibition of the results in the industrial department, no prizes or exhibitions will be allowed.
