Warden Beetkam, of < Queenstown, reporting under date October 10,- for the September quarter, says: ’
.. Mining operations, as nsukl daring the winter quarter, have been principally confined to riverworkings and tuunellihg, era icing mot being practicable. in Consequence of the hard frost Thereapltof ; i the operationsin the bed of the Shotbver; River has not been so satisfactory -is' could be desired. With- tho -exception „of_ one or;'tgo claims, no: great yield of gold has-rewarded the exertions of claim-holders. During twenty-seven weeks’ labor the burners of a cioirnknownaß the Blind Stab have' netted a very considerable sum. It is always difficult, and frequently impossible, except in thecase of registered mining companies, to ascertain the yield of gold from any particular .claim;: bnt I may mention thaji 1 navh heard . th£ produce,of the Blind Slab variously stated at’from L3OO to L4OO per man for twenty-seven - weeks’", work; A large quantity.pf stone is to crass, awaiting the break-up of the frost,'when crushing operfttiqus will be commenced:: ’ The p.rospeets,sf |tha Cornish and-Nugget mine are very favorable indeed. ; , ,
