AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

(Per Arauata at the Bluff.)

’ Melboubeh, October 12. Political nffairs are being quietly conducted, and the finishing touches are being given to the Electoral Bill before it is sent to the Upper Chamber. The Government, at length, are about to take steps to put down that moat disgraceful and obscene print Lee’s “Pictorial Budget,” and notice has been given of a Bill with t hat abject. The long wished-for rain has fallen in parts of Now South Wales, and South Australia. It was time, when LSO had to- he paid for a drink of water for travelling cattle between the Lachlan and the Darling. We now hear of several hoars’ steady rain, with plenty of water and grass. The Government have resolved to buv a reaper and binder machine at the Philadelphia Exhibition, and bring it over here to compare with < ithers. Wilson’s circus has proved a great draw. The first night 7,000 people were present, and on the following nights only a little belew that average. An unfortunate accident happened yesterday in the Breakneck (?) Hurdle Race, which will probably cost one man his life.

De Mnrska is much desired with her company to open the Academy of Music, ns it is considered that an establishment so designated should be fitly opened with opera. Although splendid terms are offered, she is, however, chary of accepting them. Irish Stew and Vnlentia aro still very strong favorites for the Melbourne Cnp; Clifton has gone back. JMewminater is very firm for the Derby. We shall shortly be entering upon the gay period, and amusements in quantity and quality will not bo wanting.
