OAMARU GOSSIP.

Yesterday was observed as a general holiday on account of the arrival 6f the Waitaki and the steeplechase; but owing to the weather the steeple* chase was postponed till Thursday. Jive hundred persons went to see the Waitaki on her ai rival, and she took 450 on a short trip round the bay, and on returning about fifty of the leading citizens sat down to a sumptuous cold collation. The usual toasts and " Success the Oamaru and Dunedin Steamship Company " were propose'), the proceed, ings being of a very enthusiastic kind, and shareholders delighted with their vessel. Mr John Dungan has been appointed editor and manager of the ' Evening Mail,* vice Mr Fred Humphries, who has resigned to accept an appointmsnt in coaneotion with the Great Northern Railway.
