ROSLYN ROAD BOARD.

This" morning Messrs Wales, Jack, Curie, Kilgour, Begg, and Lambert, as representing the Roslyn Road Board, waited upon the Superintendent and brought under his Honor's notice b'averal matters referring to the district. The .assistance of the Provincial Government was ajked towards putting in repair the road leading to the North Taieri, to which nothing had been done since the Maori prisoners had worked upon it. The sum of L2OO had been voted, but that money had been expended beyond the Kaikorai Church. In reference to the toll, the deputation v.ishedto know if the Government were disposed to abolish or remove it, it being pointed out that those in the vicinity of the City had either been abolished or removed. It b living been remarked that, in making out the lease for this particular'toll, the lessee had obtained the privilege of giving the Government a moath's notice of abandonment, if he desired to adopt that step, while no similar privilege was retaiued by the lessor, Mr Stout, who was present, explained that the lease had been so drawn because it was thought at the time that the traffic would be diverted from this road by the Cluthn railway. The thir- matter touched upon wa» the cattle yard-. It was stated that regulations had been made to prevent cattle being driven through the district during certain hours of the day, but little attention was paid by the dealers to these regulations, the consequence being that the lives of the children passing to and from school were • endangered. Only last week a bullock became unmanageable, and roved over a good deal of the district, breaking down fences and injuring gardens before it was captured. It was true to a certain extent that the Board had the matter in their own hands. They had exercised their powers by summoning to the Tolice Court offenders, against whom they obtained convictions, and on whom penalties were imposed ; but it turning out that the Board, while having to bear all the expense of prosecution received none of the fines resulting therefrom, they did not see their way clear to expending the rates for such a purpose, more especially when it was proved that the prosecutions had ito restraining influence. Lastly, in relation to the Provincial Government subsidy, inquiry was made when it would be paid. Replying to the last matter first, his Honor gave the deputation an answer which

was regarded by them as thoroughly satisfactory. Touching the toll, his Honor said aB Counties were about to be established, and - as tolls would become County revenue, it would be scarcely wise to abolish the toll. [The deputation pointed out that this toll was not within the proposed County, but was situated on the Town Belt.] His Honor, then promised that should he have anything* to do with the matter when the lease expired he would undertake to" see that the toll was al .olisked. He was afraid he could not help the Board in reference to the cattle. He had already made several representations to the Government on the subject, and the .Board would have to apply to the General Government. ■i he Provincial Engineer having been called in about the road, his Honor informed the deputation that in the Estimates now being prepared for the three months ending December 31 a sum was put down for the purpose of keeping this very road in repair.
