THE RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
At the association's annual meeting, held last night, -Major Stavely ocmipjinT the chair, the Council presented a report which spoke of the proceedings of tho past season as having been thoroughly successful, reported that the receipts had been Ll(?9» and the disbursements L 132, besides clearing off LS7 advanced by members of the association; that the* coming season would be commenced with a credit balance of L 57, and recom. mended that this matches should be held oh December 7, 8, and !?« Major Stavely : It resTte with ourselves to make the meeting even more Bni?cessful than it hitherto has been. My idea is that we should encourage the country companies ns much as possible to ccme to town to compete, so that we may get together as many Volunteers as possible. I think, however, that last year none competed but Volunteers. I hope that the matches will be kept open to the public, and that they will not be confined to Volunteers. The matches should be so arranged as to admit all comers. This is a matter for the Council to consider: if they will give effect to my suggestion they will be doing what will encourage outsiders to join the ranks of the Volunteers, as by associating with them they will find it to their advantage to become Volunteers. The office-bearers for the ensuing yearare—President, Major Stavely: Vice-Presidents, Captains Wales, Jack, and Beeves; Treasurer, Sergeant M'Gregor; Secretary, Mr James ; Council, Messrs Jamieson, Treseder, Mann, Eohn, Richardson, Douglas, Wilson, Fell, Beid, Lambert, Creagh, and Grant; each Company also to have the privilege of electing one of its members as a member of the Council.
