CITY POLICE COURT.

Friday, October 13. (Before H. S. Fish, Esq., and A Mercer, Esq., J.P.'s.)

Drunkenness.—John Strain was fined 20a, with the alternative of three days' imprisonment.

Vagrancy.-i-Ah Wong was charged with having no lawful means. Prisoner on bemg asked what he had to say replied "no savec." From the evidence adduced it appeared that he was an outcast and a streetnuisance, and it was proved that he had been jostling females in* George street.— There being five previous convictions against the prisoner he was sent to gaol for three months.

Assault.—Archibald Clark was charged with assaulting Mary Jane Lunan, at Blueskin, on October 9. Mr Brent appeared for complainant, and Mr Bathgate for defendant.—Complainant, a young woman, said that the assault was the outcome of insulting remarks made to her by defendant's children. She had a sweetheart, and the children were continually taunting her about her sweetheart. Defendant came up from behind some scrub, caught her by the arm, abused her, and threatened to strike her.—Mr Bathgate characterised the story told by the complainant and her witnesses as a fabrication, and called defendant, who denied complainant's statements and said that the threatening language was used by the Lunaas.—The defendant's wife and his daughter Mary gave corroborative evidence. —The evidence being directly contradictory, the case was dismissed.
