EVOLUTION.
In ancient times there lived an ape, With massive limbs, of uncouth shape ; His fists were large, and when distrest, He beat them wildly on his chest. But now, indeed, hath come a change— No more do apes the forest range; At last one of their race began Developing into a man ! Dear reader, in these lines you see Your once far-famed ancestry ; But, mind you, I believe the tale Of such old grandads—“like a whale.” Gumsuoker. Dunedin, September 26.
