REVIEW.

The New Zealand Turf Register ; compiled by Charles and George Elliott. Nelson: R. Lucas and Son. Dunedin : H. Wise and Co. We have received the first volume of the *N. Z. Turf Register,’ a work that has been anxiously looked for during the past two months by sportsmen and others interested in turf matters. The book would have appeared at an earlier date had it not been for the unfortunate’decease of its originator, Mr C. Elliott, just as its compilation was approaching completion. The ‘ Register’ is exceedingly well got up in every respect, the type being new and of a bold, readable size. The information containsd in the volume is of a very varied nature, the principal being full reports of the whole of last season’s race meetings—numbering 118— throughout the Colony. Were this all the book would be very valuable, as the reader is enabled to turn np at once the whole of the year’s performances of any horse then running in New Zealand; but in addition there is a long and interesting sketch history of the turf of this Colony, with particulars concerning all the great racers it has seen. Among these are Strop, Waimea, Zingara, Flora, Zoe, Potentate; Wetsail, Miss Rowe, Ladybird, Knottingley, Misfortue, Manuka, Peeress, Lurline, and Calumny. Next we find the entries for coming events, such as the Canterbury Derbies, Legers, and Champagne Stakes; Auckland Derbies, Legers, and Mares’ Produce Stakes; and the Dunedin Derbies of 1877 and 1878. After the New Zealand racing roles and those of the Dunedin Club, Dunedin and Canterbury standard weights, steeplechase rules, and other useful information, comes a series of very interesting tables, giving statistics of racing time. The quickest times for all distances are given, with the names and ages of the horses and the weights carried. This is a novel idea, and one that will be much appreciated. The work concludes with tables showing the winners of the great English races from their first introduction, and also the winners of the chief Australian and New Zealand races. The * Turf Register ’ supplies & long-felt want, and as the price is very reasonable it is within the means of everybody that takes any interest in racing matters.
