CITY POLICE COURT.

Monday, October 9, (Before H. S. Fish, Esq., and A Mercer, Esq., J.P.’s.)

Drunken ness.— Michael M ‘Grath, Robert Windsor, Michael Kane, and Wm. May, having been locked up since Saturday, were each discharged with a caution. James Elder and Henry M‘Donald were each fined ss. Robert Johnston was fined 10s, or in default, twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Margaret Smith was ordered to pay a penalty of 40s, or in default, three days’ imprisonment.

A Young Thief. David Dunlop, a little fellow, whose head barely reached over the dock, was charged, on the information of Thos. H. Davidson, engineer, with stealing a musical album, value 30s.- Prosecutor expressed his desire to withdraw the charge, as the boy had admitted his fault.—The mother of prisoner said she knew nothing further of the matter than his bringing home the musical-box, which he said he had found. The Bench, under the circumstances, allowed the charge to be withdrawn, remarking that there was little doubt he had stolen the box, and recommending the mother to chastise him. Vagrancy.— Esther Harris was charged, on remand, with having no lawful means of support.—ln answer to the Bench Inspector Mallard stated that he had received information from Wellington, where the husband of prisoner was, that a cheque had been sent to Dunedin for her benefit, and after the Court was over he would let her know who that person was, —Accused was accordingly discharged.

Forging a Cheque. —Daniel M*Keohnk^ alias M’Fadyn, was charged, on - remand, with having on the 25th September forged a cheque for the payment of L2 10s on the Bank of New South Wales, being M indictable offence.—Sarah Ivt'Grath, residing at Forbttry, said prisoner boarded wish with her in September last, and when leaving handed the cheque produced to her in payment. The cheque purported to be drawn by Neill and Boyd on the Bank of New South Wales for the payment of L2 10s. She handed him 10s in change.— Michael Meenan, produce merchant, deposed to receiving the cheque in payment of a debt and presenting it to the bank, from which it was returned marked “No account.” -Wm. G. Neill, of the firm of Neill and Boyd, deposed to the signature to the cheque being a forgery. -Detective Bain said he arrested prisoner by virtue of the warrant produced. He first said that he found it in the Post Office hall, but afterwards admitted that he had forged, the signature,—ln answer to the formal challenge prisoner said: “I plead guilty,” and was fully committed for trial.
