Norman Evans, for perjury, after a two days trial, was found guilty, but sentence was deferred. The evidence showed that the prisoner, having a grudge against a neighbor named Stackwood, accused him of stealing certahi property, and had himself, in order to fix the guilt on Stackwood, marked a saddle on Stackwood’s horse with ms own initials. The magistrates, however, dismissed the preliminary case, and ordered Evans to bo taken into custody for perjury. The Judge said it was the worst case of the kind he had ever heard, and he hoped that the law would be soon amended, so as to make the maximum punishment heavier for bad eases of per jury. He also said that if he had power to pass sentence at once, he would have given prisoner four years penal servitude, and if he got off on a technical point it would be a very great misfortune for society. He then ordered him to be kept in gaol until the decision of the Court of Appeal was known. This was the last criminal case. Wellington, October 6.
