Anproved. r The adjourned applications of Messrs Hanlon, Kelcher, and M'Arthur to purchase lyid m the Leaning Rock District, Waikerikeri Valley, was reconsidered.—The Government sent _down a recommendation that the sale be refused; the amount of compensation to be decided by arbitration.—Mr Denniston appeared for applicants; Mr Gillies for Messrs Hastie and Co.—Mr Dennistonwould ask the Board to use their own ludgment in the matter, and submitted that there was nothing shown to indicate a reversion of the decision. They had only the statement of certain miners who were not represented at the original hearing. The Government had decided adversly in the first instance, and the Board had agreed with them.-Mr Strode said the Government and the Board appeared to have been quite misled, and to have not had all the informatmn, for even the Goldfields Secretary telegraphed strongly to that effect.—Mr Gillies said the matter was adjourned to allow the Government to negotiate with the p uties.— Mr j-trode said the Board must be guided in a great measure by the Government, who cmne down with a special recommendation, ihe members of the Board could not travel up country themselves.—Mr Gillies said there were two points : the refusing or granting of the application, and the question of compensation. mendsd that ih« application should bo ro* fused.—The Board decided that the sections of land in block 2, particularly referred to in the minute of June 27, be not sold, in accordance with section 74 of the Act ot‘^lß72. Mr C. Willendorf applied for protection to prospect for copper ore, the reserve lying seaward from block 24, Taieri, with the view of obtaining lease of same. The Board decided that they had no power to grant the application. It was decided to sell as land of special value, upset price 40s per acre,, the land in block 1, Waxtahuna West, applied for by Messrs Smith and Gilland.
Ranger Hughes reported on the Mataura Paper Mill Co.’s application for twenty-one years’ lease of a small reserve opposite their site. The portion referred to in Ranger’s report of September 27 to be leased to applicants at L2 jper annum. The application of James Capstick to purchase section 1,. block. 20, Tuapeka, under agricultural lease, was approved. Mr E. C. Strode, for Messrs Potter and jpoull, applied for two months’ extension of time to complete survey of sawmill area at Ranklebum district. Granted.
Ranger Hughan recommended that Mr Adam LandeU’s application to purchase sections 8 and 9, block 12, Waipahee, be refused, which was done. Mr Wesley Tnrton, for Mr William Butler, applied for a depasturing lease over 5,000 acres of country near the Matukitnke River, ta the west of and adjoining ran 465, lease to be sold by auction after being assessed.
Messrs H. and W. Dawson having occupied and improved sections 18 and 19, block 9, Toi Tois, under deferred payment license for three years, wrote electing to have their tenure extended by obtaining leases for seven years in terms of section 54, sub-sec-tion sof the Act. Ranger to report if conditions have been complied with. The Clyde District Land Officer forwarded application by Sir F. D. Bell for a waterrace license at Poolburn on run 261. Approved.
