TESTIMONIAL TO SIR JULIO'S VOGEL.
It is the intention of several of the electors of Port Chalmers to present Sir Julius Vogel with the following testimonial, if he should visit Otago en route Home, and to forward it to him if he should not. It is being numerously signed:—
To Sib Julius Vooel, K.C.M.G. Sir,—Ou this the occasion of your leaving New Zealand, we, the undersigned electors of Port Chalmers, take the opportunity of expressing to you our thorough appreciation of the eminent services rendered by you to this Provinee and Colony. We regret that the state of your health should necessitate ycur departure, and trust that the comparatively less arduous duties attaching to the office of Agrnt-General (for which we believe you to be eminently fitted) will conduce to such a restoration as will admit of your return to the Coloy at no distant date. We regard tho dismay at, and opposition to, your departure evinced by your opponents as the greatest compliment that could be paid you, and entirely endorse the remark of the Hon. the Minister of Jnstice as recorded in ' Hansard.' " These services which he has rendered to this country will speak for themselves; and until the htat and excitement incidental to party conflict in this House shall have passed away he can very woll afford to await the result of the calmer and cooler opinions which will be given as to his character and conduct when two or three years have passed away. lam sure the verdict will be satisfactory both to himself and his friends, and satisfactory likewise to tho country." Wishing you a safe and pleasant voyage and a speedy restoration to health.
