FIRE IN UNION STREET.

To the Editor. Sir, I hereby protest against the unwarrantable insinuations made by your reporter in last night's issue, viz , " That it was singular that Stoneham brought the first horse to the main station for gear for the extinguishment of the fire." If I had been insured this would have been a dangerous statement, and probably led to damage ef character and legal lo:-s. But what are the facts 1 I had a horse, harness, and feed, to the value of L4O, in the stable, and not a shilling's worth of insurance on stable or stock. I therefore consider your reporter is not warranted in writing in such a manner without due inquiry, and I claim the right of your giving equal publicity to this statement in to-night's issue.— I am, &c, P. Stoneham. Dunedin, September 28. [On re-reading the paragraph of which Mr Stoneham complains, we are unable to see any insinuation to his discredit, but rather full credit is given to him for the promptitude with which he gave assistance to the Brigade. The cause of the fire is so plainly stated that no blame whatever can attach to him, and the paragraph only states the simple fact that unknowingly he was the first to help the Bagade in their duties. We are sorry he is not insured.—Ed. E.S.]
