HAYES'S FUNERAL.
To the Editor. u Sin, —I cannot let the article on the above subject (that appeared in the «Tablet') pass without giving your readers the facts of the case. We, (the committee that waited on the Rev. Father) had nearly half an hour's conversation with him, and in answer to the question "If they (the Church), intended to bury the deceased; ,r the auswer'was, "If the Government won't bury him I will bury him myself." It was then asked "if the Good Templars undertook to bury him would the Church give any assistance (monetary) towards that object ?" to which reply was made, "Certainlynot."- "Then:*mid you giveapieceof ground intheCatttUflj jortion of the Cemetery? " Certainly, if you wiff «buy' it." Now, I would like to ask the Catholic? clergy where they got their impression from that Hayes was to have been buried in the Catholic Cemetery in the. usual way, when there were no arrangements with the undertaker or no grave prepared ? Is it the usual way to keep the coffin above the ground about two hours while the grave is being da £. ? ... Hoping you will insert this as a justification of the commitee of Good Templars that waited on the rev. father.—l am. &c, Ose of the Committee. Dunedin, September 22.
