; A meeting ef the town Companies wan hteld in the Headquarters last night, to consider various matters competed with the force. Major Stavely occupied ii* e chair. The following were elected a committee to watch over volunteer interests : - No. 1: Captain Wales, Lieut Douglas, and Sergt. M'Gregor; North Dunedin, Lieut. Pell, Sergt. Cherrie, and Vol. Allan; Naval Brigade : Captain Smith, P. O. Jamieson, and Gunner Pratt. Lieut. A. Grant was appointed secretary, Captain Wales treasurer, and Lieutenants Douglas, Pell, and Grant a Range Committee—the latter being instructed to ascertain the exact state of the range and lease of the Anderson's Bay range, and report to the next meeting. :i On Lieutenant Pell's motion, it was decided that the captains of companies should wait on. the General Manager of Railways to ascertain what arrangements, can be made for the conveyance of Volunteers by rail to Tokomairiro or any other place that may be decided.on November; 9, it being understood that should satisfactory arrangements be arrived at with the railway authorities, a review would be held on the Prince of Wales Birthday. i It has been intimated by Captain Wales, that the Provincial Executive had agreed to give the Volunteers, a title to the Drill-shed Reserve, in accordance with a resolution of the Provincial Council, and to vest the same in trustees on behalf of the Volunteers; and that Mr Reid, M.H.R., had been asked to introduce a Bill into the Assembly to give effect to that understanding. On Friday a memorial will be forwarded to bis Honor the Superintendent, soliciting his interest to get the land legally vested in trustees. The concluding words of this memorial are : It is supposed that a difficulty will stand in the way until section 10 has been Crown-granted. The anniversary of the West Taieri TRifle ' Company was celebrated on Friday last by n match on the company's range. There v.as a liberal list of prizes for competition, in which twenty-eight took part. The ranges' were for the second class 200 and 400 yards; for the first class 200, 400, 500, and 600 yards, five shots at each—standing at 200, any position at other ranges; and recruits *2 7,£ om P ete for all P*i«» or leave off at the 400 y:ird 3 . The weather was dull, and towards the latter end of the match a steady rain set in A lad named M'Dermid, who was m the butts (where he had no business to De), was struck in the ball of the eye by a splinter of a bullet, which Dr M'Breaty extracted. It should be mentioned that in addition to.the other prizesthere wasaprkefor the highest score made at each range. The 400 yards prue was won by Corporal Grant; at 600 y~rds by Lieutenant Snow, and by Vol. MelcUum at 500 yards. The scores of the i pmetakc-is m the first-class match were :
In the match for the recruits there was a close competition for the 200 yards prize, for which W. Grant, Iveson, and Gilmour tied with 17, and in shooting off Iveson won it. Gilmour secured the 400 yards range prize in the second class. In this match the scores of the principal prizetakers were—
