BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.
Auckland, September 18. The news from New Caledonia and Norfolk Island is unimportant. Trade at the former is very quiet, and the nickel mines are almost at a standstill, owing to the unfavorable advices received regarding the ore sent Home. Twenty miners arrived there by the barque Star, under agreement for twelve months. If any more should think of trying their luck they would be unable to obtain work at Norfolk Island, as everything is quiet. The whaling season has so far proved successful, five goed-sized whales having been caught.
(From our own Correspondent).
Queesstown, September 18. The Prince of Wales stables were burnt yesterday. The fire engine was useless and the brigade helpless. The damage done is estimated at L 250, which is covered by insurance in the Norwich Union to the extent of LIOO.
The public here are disgusted with the obstructive aetion of the Opposition.
