THE SUBMARINE CABLE.

LATEST FROM EUROPE.

THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS.

London, Sept. 1. Twelve professional cricketers, who have entered into an engagement with Mr Bennett, of Melbourne, leave this month for Australia, to play a series of matches during the season 1876-7. There was some talk ia cricketing circles of a second team going out this year, but negotiations fell through. THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP. Mr Punch, Trickett's backer, has written a letter..,to the 'Standard' fully exposing the disgraceful manner in which Trickett had been treated by Lumsden, the Tyae man, who had entered into an agreement, and had signed articles for a match with the Australian for L2OO a-side, and a wager of L2OO, the understanding being that if Trickett beat Lumsden he should then row Higgins on similar terms. In order to carry out this arrangement Trickett abandoned the idea of going to America to contest in the great International Sculling Match there in connection with the Centennial Exhibition, and put himself into Harry Kelly's hands to be trained for the match with Lumsd6n. Three days before the match was to have taken place Lumsden, without assigning any reason, cried off, and his backers notified the holders to impound his share of the stakes. «Punch's ' exposure of these proceedings has elicited a general feeling of indignation ; and he is advised to. take legal steps to enforce the carrying out of the match, or to compel the forfeiture of the stakes to Trickett. A public testimonial to Trickett is suggested.
