An entertainment was given in the Linden school-room last evening, in aid of the Star of iroedom Lodge of Good Templars. -The principal performers were Mrs White, Messrs. Ibbotson, Birrell, Lothian, James, Rogers, and Gregg. Dancing followed the conceit.

Mrs Wiltshire s costume is that worn* by her when performing, feats of pedestrianism. The business at the Palice Court on Saturday was confined to the bearing of a charge of drunkenness against John Kelly, an old offender, who was fined in the maximum penalty of L 5, or, in default, fourteen days' imprisonment, with hard labor. Messrs Reeves and Main were the presiding Justices.
The subscribers to the Invercargill Hospital have held a meeting to consider the appointment of Dr Yorath by the committee, but nothing new came of it. It is intended to move in committee that the minutes of Or Yorath's appointmentjahould not be confirmed, but that is not likely to be successful.
We understand that in reply to an application made by the Dunedin Jockey Club the directors of the Forbury Park Company have agreed to lease the Park to the Club at a yearly rental of L6OO. Accerding to the statistical volume just issued by the Begistrar-General, the population of the Colony at the end of last year, not including the Maoris, was : 375,856, or an increased on the estimated population of the previous year of 33,996. The excess of births over deaths during the year was 8,726,'0r an increase over that of the previous year of only 43, the small increase in the excess being attributable to an excessive mortality among infants during the year. The excess of immigration over emigration during the year was 25,270, the total immigration amounting to 31,737, of whom 19,558 were males, and 12,179 females. The population of Otago, including Southland, was at the end of the year 109,568, against 98,067 for the previous year, being 64,161 males and 45,407 females. Otago is the most populous Province in the Colony, and Marlborough the least, as its population at the end of last year numbered only 7,205.
