The injured man gave information to the police, who arrested the culprit, who is under remand till to-morrow.
At a meeting of the Fire Brigade held last evening, Messrs R. M. Marks and Phelps were elected hon. members. The Secretary' was instructed to telegraph to Secretary Tolley, of the Wellington Brigade, that the cup, worth twenty guineas, would be run for on Boxing Day at the Caledonian Society's new grounds, the best eight men from each team to form the Brigades. It was also agreed that invitations to be present at the demonstration should be sent to Sydney, Victoria, Tasmania, and the whole of New Zealand.
A public meeting was held in Mr Nauraan's South Dunedia Hotel last evening to consider the propriety of forming a Choral Society in the district. Mr was elected chairman, and explained the purposes of the meeting. After several gentlemen present had expressed themselves highly favorable to the cause, an interim committee was appointed to wait upon the residents with a view to obtaining and to report at an adjourned public meeting to be hold on Wednesday next.
From official returns it appears that the total number of mortgages on land effected in 1875 was 5,651, representing tho amount of L3,(J66,()95 15s 3d ; the releases were •2,208,: representing the amount of L 1,230,131 13s 8d; the excess of mortgages over releases amounting to L 2,436,564 Is 7d. Of the mortgages, 2,308, representing the amount of LI, 637,308 14s 11a, were effected under the Land Transfer Act, and 3,343, representing the amount of L 2,029,387 0s 4d, under th§ previous deeds registration system. The chairman of the. Tuapeka Progress Committee telegraphed last week to the Minister for Public Works:—"Could: arrangements be entered into for the carriage of the reason's wool by rail from Lawrence to Dunedin. There ia almost nothing doing ou tho railway at present When do you expect railway to be opened?" And received the following reply:—"Specification for plaielaying between Lawrence and Glenorc is in preparation j this cannot be carried on untiltho Round Hill tuunel is completed. 'I he line should he completed in throe or four montho."

In the course of a case heard at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning Mr Bathgate, R.M., observed that residents in the vicinity of the Town Belt have not the right to allow fowls to roam about on the reserve. The Belt is set apart for people's recreation solely.
An accident happenecl yesterday' evening on board the s.s. Taupo to one of the hands named John Bonney, who, while discharging cargo, had one of the Bmall bones of his ancle broken through a case striking his leg as it fell out of the slings. He was sent to the Hospital by the last train. There was a short sitting at the City, i? hce , Court to-day. Thomas Watson, charged with drunkenness, was dismissed. Henry Jones, a cabman, charged Maurice Tandut with assaulting him and with damaging his cab. Both cases were dismissed. Messrs Reeves and Main presided.
On Thursday last a .new Oddfellows' Hall was opened with Rome ceremony in Timaru by the grand officers of the 1.0.0.P., to which Order Lodge Star of Canterbury belongs. The officers present were—G.M. Bro. Braithwaite ; D.G.M. Bro. Russell; «>;■ „ Bro - Alex &ader; G.S. Bro. Boyd; ?; C - t B rc>. Wheeler; P.G. Bro. Reid; Grand Marshall, Bro. T. E. Price; Grand Herald. Bro. Dobie; P.G. Bro. Sutherland; Lodge Chaplain, Bro. J. King; N.G. Bro. B. Wallis; J.G. Bro. timber—and the proceedings, as reported in the Timaru papers, we * e . a counterpart of those with which the hall m Albany street was dedicated in May last. There was a banquet in the evening, and in responding to the toast of the grand officers G.M. Bro; Braithwaite said he" had lately attended two meetings in other parts of the Colony. The upshot wouldbe on their return to Dunedin, the opeoing of two more Lodges. There-were at the present time twenty-three, Lodges in New Zealand, and although their Order had only been eleven year? here, there were already 1,000 financial members. The Dunedin visitors 'express, themselves highly delighted with their reception at Timaru.
