CITY COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon; present—The Mayor (in the chair), Crs. Gibson, Grant, Wright, Woodland, Campbell, Thomson, Brown, Isaac, Fish, and MoUison.
An application was forwarded for leave to quarry bluestone from the Town Belt, to be used in the erection of the new Middle District School.—Cr. Fish moved, and Cr. Wright seconded a proposition that the request be complied with.—Cr, Grant moved that the matter be referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. This was seconded by Cr, Brown, on the ground that there was not sufficient metal for the roads. —The motion was carried.
The South Dunedin Town Council again brought under the notice of the Corporation the nuisance caused by stagnant water at the Manure D«p6t. The matter was referred to the Sanitary Committee. The Harbor Board wrote, forwarding for the serious consideration of the Corporation the report by the committee appointed to inquire into the state of the approaches to the Rattray street wharf.—Cr. Fish was of opinion that the Corporation had some responsibility in the matter.—The Mayor having explained that the street was not yet formed, and that the Corporation could derive no rates for a considerable time, Cr. Fish asked to be allowed to withdraw his remarks. Cr. Isaac wag also of opinion that the Corporation had no right to form roads until the adjacent property was rateable. He moved that a reply be forwarded to the Harbor Board to that effect.—The Mayor suggested that the matter be referred to the Works Committee to bring up a special report thereon, which was agreed to. The Sanitary Committee recommended that laspecter Nimon's resignation of office of Inspector of Nuisances, Ac., be accepted, and that applications be invited by advertisement from persona willing to undertake the duties of Inspector of Nuisances, Licensed Vehicles and Drivers, a d Inspector under the Building Regulations; salary at the me of L2OO per aunum • the pei son appointed to bo directly under the author! y of the Medical Officer of Health in all matteis pertaining to sanitary affairs. That the suit commenced against the Corporation by certain citizens relative to the establishment of the Fever Hospital on the Town Belt be defended by the Corporation on public grounds, 'i he Surveyor has been instructed to prepare (in conjunction with the Health Officer) a return of all the houses in the City, classifying th m so as to enable your committee to recommend some uniform system for the disposal of the City nightsoil, &o. Cr, has been elected permanent chairman of the committee.
The Gas Committee reported that they cannot recommend that any redu ;tion be made at present in the monthly charge for rent of gas meters, The Gas Engineer has been instructed to report as to what streets can be supplied with gas from the stock of mains now on hand; tenders will be called for laying the mains (labor only) on receipt of this report, Thu Engineer has been instructed to take stock at the Gas Works so as to enable a balance sheet to be prepared as soon as possible, showing the transactions of the Gas Department since the purchase of the works. A schedule of gas plant was submitted to the committee, and authority has been given to forward an order for the same to Messrs Laidlaw and Sons, Glasgow, by next mail. ° ’
