HARBOR IMPROVEMENT.

To the Edit >r. Sib,—l am very happy to think that you, in your leader of this evening, and I are in accord regarding the conservation of the harbor, and I hope your article will give food for digestion to those narrow-minded members of our City Council who think they can make Dunedin prosper without the aid of our magnificent harbor. I further hope the general public will take a little more interest m such a momentous question, and see that their interests are not sacrificed by the old Scotch axiom of "loseing windlings gathering straws." If ever two interests should go hand-in-hard it is those of the City and the Harbor Board, and for more than one reason. For instance, the Harbor Board by virtue . f their powers can stop the sewers being discharged int-o the bay; they can stop the Corporation getting a site for baths

and obtaining many other priviliges Now, would it not bo better to seo our Cit] Council and Harbor Board pulling tugethei and devising means to mutually benelit th< City ? Let the City Council taka a leaf frorr the Public Works Act, and make the streets through the reclaimed l*nd, in anticipation of large, revenue to be ultimately had from it. Again, I would point out to the City Council the advisability of taking advantage, for the purpose of sewage, of the training wall to be run down the centre of the harbor. I believe those two works could be made a mutual advantage. There is no doubt it would be an expensive job* but the cheapest in tbe end. This is one of those questions that the sense of the citize s ought to be taken upon, and the Mayor, though he is a member of the Harbor Board, ought to take stops to have it settled one way or another. I hope some abler person will take the matter up.—l am, fto., Aquarius. Dunedin, Sept. 4.
