PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held last evening/ when there were present the Mayor, Crs M‘Kinlay, M‘Gregor, Asher, Reid, Menelaus, Graham, Miller, and Dodson. Among the correspondence read were the following From Mr J. C. Harris, for reimbursement of expenses for injuries received on June 2, and from Mr G. Boag, offering L 4 per annum for piece of ground, Carey’s Bay road, for the erection of stables. In reference to the latter an animated discussion arose, Cr. Miller entertaining the Council with his version of the benefits to the public health derivable from the proximity of dungheaps, which he Staten to be the most
healthy embrflfchjqemta, a town could possess. The Council evidently thought otherwise, as the motion was rejected by six votes, there voting for it only Crs. Miller and Dodson.
The Inspector of Works reported in reference to certain crossings that several needed repair, and that no crossing had been formed opposite Bolton’s leasehold section, Wickliffe Terrace. On the motion of Cr. Graham it was decided that a proper pitched crossing should be formed at Bolton’s in accordance with permission granted him two years since. The Council decided further that all future crossings should be made level where practicable, subject to the discretion of the Inspector of Works, and that the road leading to Victoria Terrace should be made at an estimated cost of L 23.
On the report of the Works Committee being submitted it was decided to defer its consideration until next meeting; while in reference to the Reserves Committee's re!)ort recommending that Mr J, Thomson’s ease of the recreation ground be cancelled, it was decided to call for fresh tenders for re-leasing the ground on the same conditions as formally. On the report of the Lighting Committee recommending that a lamp be placed in George street near the Foresters’ Hall, there was considerable discussion.— Cr. Miller stated that other Councillors were animated by private pressure to urge the erection of this lamp, and on the Council deciding to adopt the report he repeated his observations. Cr. Graham drew the attention of the Mayor to Cr. Miller’s unfounded assertions, and declined to sit at the Council table if the words were not withdrawn.—The Mayor would not permit such language as Cr. Miller's, and adjourned the Council for twenty minutes. On resuming, the Mayor stated that in future he intended to check these outbursts promptly. Councillors should see the necessity of behaving in a courteous manner to each other, and improper motives should net be ascribed to any member of the Council. He trusted he should not have occasion to mention this matter again. The report of the Finance Committee, with the bMance-shoet for the period ending July 31, 1876, was adopted, as was that of the Waterworks Committee, informing the Council that in accordance with the engineer’s certificate a further progress payment was duo to the contractor, to meet which they hsd prepared eleven debentures for issue to him.
The tender of Mr W. C. Simmons to break 200 yards of metal at 6s per yard was accepted, and permission granted to the Rev. Mr Moore to take a few loads of gravel from he quarry. In reference to the indent of hose for the Fire Brigade, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Asher, that the matter be placed in the hands of Messrs Bright Brothers. Cr. Graham gave notice of motion that at next meeting he wotild move that the resolug tion relative to Mr J. C. Harris’s claim for compensation be rescinded ; and Cr. Asher —That the Town Clerk should prepare a return of all rates levied in each separate ward. The meeting then adjourned.
