OTAGO POULTRY AND CANARY ASSOCIATION.

The first annual show of the above society was opened this afternoon in the Friendly Societies* Hall, Princes street. Considering the short time that has elapsed since the formation of the society, the committee may fairly congratulate themselves on the success which has attended their efforts, for if the entries are not quite so numerous as might be desired, the quality of the exhibits fully makes up for any deficiency in that respect. The largest number of entries appears to be in the game classes, and tbu birds exhibited in many pens are really first-class, and would hold their own against all comers. Messrs M'Donnell, George. Brampton, Hiue, and Bailey show some splendid black reds, and other gentlemen have exhibits in this class of almost equal merit. The entries in duckwings arc numerous, while in white game some beautiful birds are shown by MrM'Donnell. A pair of very handsome black game is also shown by Mr . Parker. Oune bautams are also fairly represented, some of the exhibits being much admired. In the other varieties of poultry the entries were rather scarce; those, however, which are entered are fine birds, notably the white and buff cochins In Spanish there were only two entries, one, a ■ingle hen, exhibited by Mr Buck, being awarded a certificate of merit. A Dorking hen, shown by the same{ gentleman, was a fine specimen, and !also awarded an honorary certificate. In Brahmas, Mr Harper is a large exhibitor, and he shows some fine birds. Mr Langmuir's Houdans, Mr Harper’s gold ■paugled Hamburgs, and Mr M'DonnelTa gold spangled Polands are each fair specimens of their respective breeds. In pigeons Mr Harper has it nearly all his own way, almost the only other competitor being Mr Armstrong, who fakes first prize for barbs. The canaries are numerous, Messrs J, B. Bradshaw and Harper dividing the honors in this class. There are several entries of foreign birds some of which are of great beauty. “ Little Nell," the Californian Diamond, sends a number of enti i -s in this class, the most noticeable of which are some clever talking cockatoos, a talking tui, and a beau, tifu ly plumed bird from Queensland, called the elegant or many-colored parrot. Mr C. C. Armstrong sends for exhibition on y a Chinese mocking bird, a Bosella parrot, and several other pretty varieties. Some fine rabbits are shown by Mr Har, >er, be being the only competitor in this class. The entries in dairy produce are few, but good, the bams and bacon looking particularly attractive. Wo also noticed a bast et of enormous goose eggs, and hj dish of fancy butter, too design aua execution of the latter reflecting infinite credit on its fair maker. We bad almost forgot to mention *• The Admiral," a one-legged gome cock exhibited by Mr H'Doqqcll, and tlio horo of many battles* He is quite the curiosity of the show. Taking it altogether, the show is creditable ie those cor earned in getting it .-p, and we have no doubt that next year it will be more successful still. We have to thank the committee for their courtesy in affording ns information. Owing to the judging being completed at a rather late hour we think it advisable to hold over the prize-list till to-morrow, when we shall be able to publish it in its complete state.
