THE UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS.
To the Editor,
'■Sir, —The language of a paragraph in last. night's Star about Mr S. Solomon obtaining | hisj degree leads a good many of your readers tn imagine thab the B.A. degree to which he was admitted is of a- kind superior to any granted before. >uch.-is, however, not the fact. The examinations under the Otago University regulations, which Messrs A. W. Williamson and Peter Seton Hay passed, arefar more difficult than' those which Mr Solomon passed. What I state will be found correct on comparison of the respective rules or from inquiries of the Professors or the Registrar. It was because the standard by which "Mr >Splomon passed was found too low that the New Zealand University lately altered it.. In conclusion,- permit me to state that these remarks are not for a moment intended to. reflect upon Mr Solomon, wihh whoSe success at the High School and University most of your reader* are acquainted. My object is simply to see justice dono to Messrs Williamson and lia'y, who are absent.—l am, &c, Dunedin, August 25. Gustav Hirsoh.
