Auckland, August 25. In reply to a resolution adopted by the Wbangarei meeting calling on Sir Robert Douglas to support the Separation resolutions, the member for Marsden telegraphed refusing to comply, and offering to resign if the electors as a body wished him to do so. The "Waipa electors afterwards held a meeting,. and passed a vote of confidence in him, but urged the throwing out of the Counties Bill. August 26. The Opera company played " The Hermit's Bell" last night to a crowded house. The opera was a great success, encores being demanded incessantly, and Madame Simonsen and Signor Morley were cheered. The opera will probably be repeated for some time. Wellington, August 25. It is understood that Mr Bridges is no longer a director of the National Bank, and that he ceased to be so shortly after his return to London. It is said that his action in reference to the Bank of New Zealand last year has had something material to do with his retirement. [The above confirms the information published in our columns on the 18th inst.] August 26. P The Corporation have bought the gasworks for about L 40,000. They will also pay the preliminary expenses incurred by the proposed new gas company, the formation of which will now be abandoned. Chkistchtjkch, August 25. The annual poultry, pigeon, and canary exhibition to-day was a great success. There ware 372 entries, being 120 more than last year. The quality of exhibits was very good. A pigeon race took place during the day from Ashburton to Ohristchurch. The winner flew the distance (56 miles), against a strong breeze, in lhr. 40min. 12secs.
