DUNEDIN POULTRY ASSOCIATION.
To the. editor. ; t Sir, —It is very seldom that in my position- as secretary of any society with which I am connected I rash into -print, bat I cannot allow the letter in your wane of yesterday, dated-from Mosgifelaad signed "A Country Member of the D.P.A., .to go unanswered. I may at once state openly that the preparation of the programme for the coming show was referred to a sab-committee, and that, in furtherance of my duties as secretary of the Assoaiatioh, I prepared the programme, and inserted Wright's standard of judging in preference to that of Tegetmier, which had been formerly Used, forthe following reasons :—lst. That the objects of the Association, as declared in the second, rule, are "the improvement of the breed of domestic poultry, and as such I thought it my duty to recommend the best and Jatest authority. 2nd. Because Wright's stah[dard has now been in use in the Old ; Country, Victoria, and Christchurch for some time, and I did not think it ad-' visable for the D.P.A. to be behind the age. The members of the subcommittee agreed with me, and the Srogramme, as prepared by me for lem, was unanimously adopted, both by the sub-committee and general committee. From all that I can hear the few dissatisfied parties are owners of game fowls ; now, it is well known that I am not personally interested in that class of poultry, and therefore cannot be charged with ch -.aging the standard of judging for my own benefit, but sorely those parties must know that game .fowls are only one of a number of tdescriptions of poultry that the D.P.A. hopes to see exhibited on the 9th and 10th September, and that any change in the standard of judgment must affect all classes alike. I do not pretend to be a judge of game fowls, but I have carefully studied the two standards and fail to see any appreciable difference that Bhould cause dissatisfaction among the owners of such birds, the only difference I can see is that the points and true colors are more clearly defined by Wright, and surely anyone wishing to improve his breed would adopt the beit and latest authority. As I have only the welfare of the society at heart, I shall be happy to meet any dissatisfied member of the D.P.A. at my office, where they can have an opportunity of inspecting both Wright and Tegetmier and pointing out to me wherein the Committee have erred. As the owner of another description of poultry, I have as much right to feel dissatisfied at the owners of game fowls, but bearing in mind the objects of the Asscc ; ation I will cheerfully submit to be adjudged by the best and latest authority, knowing at the same time that all the exhibits will fall far short of even Tegetmier, and that the Ernes will be awaided by the judges to the est bloods of the different classes, if worthy of merit, although they may not come up to any standard. Sir, there is an axiom that there is no wrong without a redress. Now is it not a curious circumstance that, as Secretary, I have not received a single letter or protest from any member of the D.P.A. on this subject. IWe stated simple facte for the wfarmatioii of the public, and shall not repfy to any «rauHuaieata«ns through the Prete.— I am, &©., Sti>n«t Jaheb, Secretary DP. k. Dunedin, August 18,
