AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

[Per Alhambra at Grey mouth.) Melbourne, August 10. The result of the Queensland and Barrabool collision has been to cast all the blame on the second officer of the Barrahool, who disobeyed orders in neglecting to show the steamer’s light, and also in recklessly porting the helm, which caused the collision. The individual losses are most seriously felt, as nothing was saved by those on board the Queensland. The Barrahool has been visited by thousands since she returned in her shattered condition.

Political matters have been interrupted by a want of confidence motion. The Premier last night made a splendid speech. He strongly condemned the loss of time, and called on the Opposition to displace the Go vernment at once, if they were in a position to do so.

Alfred Blanche, accountant to the Fnglia and Scottish Company, has been committed for trial for embezzling L9OO. There has been a splendid rainfall all over the country, and the drought has com pletely broken up. Seventy-two horses have accepted for the Melbourne Cup. The statement that the Java-Darwin cable is worm- eaten, is denied.

Mrs Scott Siddons is drawing good houses at the Theatre Royal in pieces. The markets are much improved, and an advance in several commodities is noted.
