PRESENTATION TO MR REYNOLDS.

The very handsome service of plate, Subscribed for preseLtation to Sir W. H. Eeynolds, M.H.K , was presented to that gentleman in the City Council Chambers this afternoon. The salver bore the following inscription : —" Presented to the Hon. William Hunter Reynolds. M.H.B. and M.P.C., by the citizens of Dunedin, as a small mark' of their ap neeciation of his : services as their representative in the General Assembly and Provincial Council for twenty-two year*." His Wobsbit said be had been requested as Mayor of the City to present Mr Reynolds with a very handsome and valuable service of plate subscribed for by bis fellow-citizens of ail creeds, countries, and every variety of religious opinion. Jt was a token of the appreciation of some political and some personal friends. He Lad bad great pleasure in knowing Mr Reynolds for the period of thirteen years, ana had always found him the same kind-hearted and frank person. Mr Reynolds had represented the City of Dunedin in the Provincial Council for nearly twenty-three years, and bad represented the City in the Assembly at Wellington and Auckland for somewhere about fifteen years, and however much the citizens might have differed from him daring the past few years in polities, it must be taken as on earnest that he had given great satisfaction by his having been elected twenty-two years in succession as member of the Provincial Council. It would be seen that the subscriptions must hare been very large indeed, When he stated that the subscriptions receiver ranged from a shilling to half-a-orown. The citizen? owed Mr Reynolds some amount of credit toi’ the assistance he had rendered In securing for' the Corporation that very vainable property oi which they were now possessed. In presenting the service, he (hia Worship) expressed the hope, which he was sure would bo echoed by ell present, that Mr Reynolds would have every prosperity and long life to use and enjoy that valuable present.

Mr Reynolds, in reply, stated that he considered it a very great honor to bo representative of the City of Dunedin for so many years. Of course there would be diversity of opiuiou as to the notion of a representative, and ho was sorry .to say that that was the fflna wlvh him about twelve mopfia ago. However, be was not going to enter upon politics on the present occasion; he would merely say that in the long run he had done the best ui.de- the olrcumstances—(Applause) ; and possibly when he was dead and gone be would get credit for bis actions. He assured the subscribers to the testimonial that he appreciated very highly the presentation made to him, and he should keep it in hia family as a# heir-loom to show that the citizens of Dunedin knew how to appreciate the services of the! .pub: io •emote.
