Theft.—William Hardy was called upon to answer a charge of stealing coal, but did not appear. Inspector Mallard stated that accused was a householder in the City, and he had admitted him to bail upon his own recognisance of LlO. He asked their Worships to issue a warrant for bis apprehension.— The evidence of the arresting constable was that he found aocusod in the vicinity of the railway grounds this morning, about three o'clock, with a quantity of coal in his possession. Accused made an attempt to escape when he saw the constable, but finding his efforts futile, wished to enter upon a compromise by giving him a Ll-note to keep silence.—Their Worships said they would immediately issue a warrant. Insulting Language.—Jas. Runcimanv. Geo. Wallace. —This was a trivial case, in which the defendant had used insulting language towards oomplainant on the Ist of August (aa election day) at Green Island.— Mr Hoskins appeared for the oomplainant, and Mr Harris for defendant. After several witnesses had "been called on each side, their Worships said they had no doubt the language complained of hod been used, and they would impose a tine of 10s, with costs.— John Scanlan v. William Timms was another case coming under the above heading, but wider different circumstances. It appeared that defendant had a grudge against complainant, through the latter hav'jug judgment given'in nig favor in a case in the Ile&ulant Magistrate's Court recently, and ou the 9tu instant the defendant used disgraceful and provoliiPg language towards complainant. —Their Worships were of opinion that this was a case in whioh they could not inflict a fine, and they hound deftmdaofc over to keep the peace for gi? months in his owh recognisance of L2O, and pwo sureties of LlO eaou.
