The Evening Star MONDAY, AUGUST 7, 1876.

The Mount Ida 'Chronicle' understands that thiti ye;ir an effort is to be made by the for the- mail coauhes to run through from Dunedin to Nasebv in one day. Tina will mean establishing their enointu at Cromwell.

We have received from the Government Printer, Wellington, No. 11 of 'Hansard.'

The ' Home News ' says : - Father Hyacinthe and Madame Loyson have arrived in London from Switzerland. The celebrated divine and his wife are staying with the Right Hon. W. p. Cewper-Teinple, M.P., and Mrs Temple, at their residence in Great Stanhope street, May Fair.

On Saturday the Dunedin Naval Brigade took possession of tfieir range at Lawyer's Head; A squad of twenty-five men, under the command of Captain Smith, left town at two o'clock with their two 32pounder guns, and in three hours' time had them deposited on the site where the battery is to be built. Having accomplished their ta.sk the company marched back to town and were dismissed.

The correspondent who on Friday favored us with a communication respecting the curious articles found in the collection bags of a church in Dunedin, writea complaining of our having added to his contribution the words "if they can be discovered." From tha wording of the original paragraph we did not surmise that the liberal donors were known, and we therefore made the addition in question. .. .

Owing to other attractions the Popular Concerts, which were resumed on Saturday evening, at the Temperance Hall, did not secure a very large attendance. The programme included Aleck O'Brien (Salamander Sam) in dances and negro sketches, Messrs Hanscombe, Dixon, Carroll, &c. A farce in which Messrs O'Brien, Nixon, and Heywood took part, was redemanded. Mr Sykes, as usual, presided at the piano.

The half-yearly meeting of the Otago Typographical Association took place in the Provincial Hotel on Saturday evening, whon there was a good attendance. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr Chas. Janion; Vice-President, Mr James Caradus; Treasurer, Mr W. G. Wilkinson; Secretary, Mr. W. C. Quin ; Truetees, Messrs Claxton, Risk, and Jolly; Auditors, Messrs Harper and Hutton.

An interesting skating match took place on Saturday afternoon at Mr Hamilton's rink in the Octagon Drill-shed, and during the day there was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen. The prize for the match was a field glass, and the competitors were handicapped, the distance being a mile. The winner proved to be C. H. Martin (eight yards start), who did the mite in smiu. 37sec. A. Sergeant (scratch) was second, his time being smin. 42sec. !

At the Queen's Theatre on Saturday evening Shakespeare's tragedy ' " King Lear" was produced for the first time in Dunedui for many years. ' Mr Talbot of course filled the principal character, and he afforded;his audience a great treat by his excellent delineation of the part. He was fairly Supported by the members of the company m the subordinate characters, and the play went off very satisfactorily. To-night Mr Talbot taltes a farewell benefit, when we hope to see a fullhouse; for 'this deserving actor has had strong opposition to fight against during his stay in Dunedin.

The fortnightly meeting: of they Law Students' Society was held in the library of the Supreme Court on Saturday evening, Mr Nation (vice-president): in the chair. The discussion was resumed on the question—"Does the will of a married woman pasß property left her under her husband's will ?" The decision arrived at was that all property left to her separate use, or over which a power of appointment is given, would pass ; but not other property. The subject fixed upon lor next meeting is—"Can a tenant, who, with the consent of his landlord, remains in possession after the expiration of his term, leave the premises without notice to quit?" Owing to the wet weather there were no football matches on Saturday afternoon, but a scratch match at hockey was played at Montecillo. Tough the ground was very sloppy some twenty-two players assembled. SiJes were chosen by the captain and deputy-captain, and they proved very evenly matched, the feur first goals being divided During the fifth contest some of the best play yet shown was exhibited, and the fight lasted for more than an hour. Unfortunately the ball was, after all, struck through the deputy-captain's goal. Whilst a discussion was proceeding, and the goal-keeper being absent from his post, it rolled leisurely through the flags, and deprived both sides of the anticipated scrimmage which was to decide the contest. The following is a list of the players :—Captain's side : Macfarlane, Rose, H. M'Neill, A. M'Neill, Campbell, Mills, M'Glashan, Patterson, Brannigau, M'Kevin. Deputy-captain's : Richardson, F. R. Smith, (J. Fulton, Morrison, Ruck, Russell, Clarke, Valpy, Pratt, J. C. Thomson.

An emotional play in four acta, entitled " Alixe," was produced for the first time in Dnnedin at the Princess's Theatre on Saturday evening. The material used in the construction oE the piece is very much similar to that found in "FrouFrou" and "East Lynne/' and the leading incident of the drama is the encounter by an erring wife of a husband, .from whom she has been estranged for over twenty years. As the drama is to be repeated this evening, we will not describe the many complications which ensue after the wife's discovery, but content ourselves by stating that it abounds in the sensational element, and that there are some effective tableaux in the course of the play. As Alixe, Mrs Lingard played very naturally, her utter hoivor on discovering that she was an illegitimate child being ably depicted. Misa Colville was Alixe's mother, and although "old women" parts are not in this lady's line, the character received full justice at her hands. Mr Hoskius as De Cesarenne, and Mr Douglas as De Kerdran, made the most of their respective parts. Broad farce appears to be Mr Liugard's particular line, and in the afterpiece "The Weaveis" —lie fairly revelled as Simmons, and succeeded in keeping his audience thoroughly amused. The same programme will be played to-night.
