** Macbeth' was reproduced at the Queen's, Theatre last evening. Mr Talbot appeared as Macbeth, Mrs W. Hill as Lady Macbeth, and. Mr Steele as Macduff, and their several characters were faithfully represented. A capital piece of acting was Lady Macbeth'a sleep-walking scene. "IWaeoand Juliet "is announced for this evening, and for to-morrow "King Lear," a play which has not been seen in this City for many years. A man named Hugh Stewart was accidently drowned at the head of the Lake Wanaka on the morning of the 23rd ult. The • Argus' says the deceased was an old resident in the district, and had been for sometime in the employ of Mr T. Pirn as boatman. It appears that on the morning of the 23rd the deceased was pushing off a small boat from the shore, and it running i<;to the lake with greater impetus than he reckoned upon, he lost his hold of the boat and fell into the lake. The body has been recovered. The clock at the Resident Magistrate's Court appears to be affected by the elements, for periodically it is out of working gear. This morning it was not going, and as Mr Bathgate wished to adjourn a case till the afternoon he directed attention to the timepiece, saying that there would be some difficulty in determining when it was two o'clock. Counsel mutually agreed to be guided by the town clock; aud the bailiff, j whose duty it is to attend to the clock, suggested that it was out of sorts owing to the heavy weather. The weather is reported as being very severe at Alexandra, and consequently there is but very little doing in mining. The dredge working on the Molyneux between there and Clyde has been idle for the last few days, owing to some disarrangement of the pump, but all is now right, and the men recommenced work. They are making good wages, and no doubt they will come across some good patches missed by the dredges some years .-ince. At Butcher's Point there is nothing doing, owing to no water flowing through the water-races. This is to be regretted, as the Molyneux is now low enough for the claims to be worked from the main bottom, and perhaps when the weather breaks and water is again flowing through the races, the Molyneux may take a fit and rise tCo high for the main bottom to be worked.
Should the weather prove favorable tomorrow afternoon the return football match between the ex-High School pupils and the Dunedin Club will take place on the Southern Cricket Ground. Jerseys can be obtained from the Secretary. : Au occasional correspondent writes to us : —"The treasurer of one of our City churches showed me lately a rather curious repository in his cashbox. It contained various Sunday offerings made within the last six months of a kind not much availabb; for assisting to pay the gas bill or any other oF the many expenses of a church. These offerings consist of one bad shilling, two battered threepenny bits, one brass locket, three worthless copper coins, one male button, five female buttons, and one quartz pebble (not auriferous). They were al! modestly slipped from week to week into the church wardens' crimson bags, as these went their rounds during service. Are we to believe that such gifts proceeded from the promptings of tender conscience in many liberal [persons who had accidentally gone to church purseless ? Certainly not ? and I hope the churchwardens of that church will not be deterred by tender conscience or anything else froa- disclosing the names of the contributors of such offerings when they come to make their next annual statement," if they can -be discovered. Mr M'Lean, pf Morven Hills Station, last week informed the 'Cromwell Argus' that some miscreant had been guilty of shooting one of the deer acclimatised in the Lindjs district. The original stock were brought from Dunedin on to the Morven Hills run, at very considerable expense, by Mr MM.car, some years since, and have aU along been looked after with great care. Five was the number let loose, and they have now increased considerably. Mr M'Lean reoently saw fourteen in a herd, and the whole number is known to be not less than twenty. In the face of this success it is t» b« regretted that any person wou'd be dastard enough to destroy these valuable animals, which have been brought into the ocmntry at much.trouble and cost. The one shot was a splendid buck, its antlers carrying seven points indicating that the monai'ch was just in his prime. It is but poor reward to gentlemen who exert themselves aad spend money in stocking the ocmntry with game tj find their efforts thwarted by wanton destruction such as we have referred to.
