CITY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the City Council, being the last of the present body, was held this afternoon; present—the Mayor (in the ohoirl, Crs. Gibson, Grant, Mollison, Campbell, Isaac, Brown, Leary, Roberts, Quick, and Chapman. The Colonial Secretary wrote that the Government had much pleasure in instnict : ng the Govern* ment printer to forward to the Corporation all Acts re'erring t > municipalities.—The Match explained that hitherto the Corporation had not received Bills brought before the Assembly, and that he Red made application fer them.—Cr Gbabx thought the thanks of the Council were due to hie Worship for his action.
An offer from John Huie, to sell 120 acres of land above the reservoir for LSOO, was referred to the Water Supply Committee. A memorial was read from residents and owners of property in Lower Cargill street, asking that the street sh- uld not be further lowered, but should be continued at its present gradient. Cr. Campbell : strongly supported-the petition, and stated that if the street was cut down seven feet it wonld lessen . the value of a great deal of the property, and there • would be no oud of compensation. The memorial was referred to the Works Commitee. John Grcig askod that the Council reconsider their decision not to allow bill-posting on the hoarding iu the Cutting. He denied that he pos> sesse 1 any monopoly, and as proof thereof presentad a petition Signed by all the printers in Duq. e lin, Messrs Eeid and Fenwick excepted.—Cr. * Isaac moved that the petition be hot jee- . ceived.—Ti e Mayor pointed out that it was the duty of tho Council to receive any petition couched in respectful language. He failed (o see anything disrespectful in the petition. At next meeting of the Council ho would move that all hoardings be let, as LBCO or LhOO was do be received i a that way.—The petition was referred to the Reserves Committee. The Water Supply Committee recommended that the members for the City be asked to Introduce into Parliament an amendment on clause 9of the r>u.K (liu. Waterworks Extension Act, 1875, to the effect that, notice of election to take lands for the purpose of a catch-vater or { atleriug ground may ue given within two years from October 21, 1870, and that the operation of the Act be extended to include the Waitati stream. That p wev be given by the Council to the Committee to initial c negot iat ions, and t-. -finally, arrange terms •ortho purebas-- o and iu the district of Flagstaff, which the committee any deem n.ccssary for the . proper extension of Hie City water supply. The " arks Committee recommended that a footbridge be erected over the Water of Lsith at Harbor Terrace in compliance with memorial.
